The tour
The Marais is where Jewish Paris begins. For over a century, the streets around rue des Rosiers (the Pletzl, "the little place" in Yiddish) have been the beating heart of Jewish life in France. Every doorway has a story: the Ashkenazi migrations of the 1900s, the Sephardic renewal after 1962, the tragedies and the rebirths.
As an official guide of the Museum of Jewish Art and History (MAHJ) for the past three years, I walk these streets every week. I will show you what guidebooks miss: the courtyards, the inscriptions, the bakeries, and the living community behind the facades.
